When was the last time, you experienced something for the first time? Sardine Run 2012 / 2013 : Port Elizabeth, Expert Tours was out on the water again (Saturday 28 May) with Sardine Run clients and was treated to an amazing spectacle that hed seen before and been waiting for another opportunity to witness. Rainers and his clients were looking for sardine activity in and around Algoa Bay and began by following a huge pod of common dolphins. The dolphin came from the west of the bay and the pod was at least 2 000 strong. If youve ever followed a pod of these dolphin youll know how exciting it can be. They move at incredible speeds and churn the water up around and behind them. Individuals flash across the bow wave of the RIB while others spy-hop or leap clear out of the water. Gannets and other birds follow them in a rush of excitement. Rainer and clients followed the pod and after about three hours the pod joined up with another pod of some 1 000 common dolphin which came from the east of the bay. An awesome mega-pod of some 3 000 dolphin formed and joined forces to hunt for sardine. And then to make the exciting pod of dolphin seem mundane, a pod of 3 orca appeared and began to hunt the dolphin.This is the phenomenon Rainer has witnessed before and which formed the basis of a Discovery Channel documentary. This behaviour on the part of the orca is not an isolated one and seems to becoming more and more regular. The annual sardine run brings together a mass of predators and it makes sense that the orca would avail themselves of the opportunity to hunt the bountiful pods of common dolphin. Beginning at the end of May and running through to August, Algoa Bay and the East Coast of South Africa becomes a hot spot for predatory activity. This year looks like it could be a bumper year for activity. We'll keep you informed of activity as it develops. In the meantime grab your gear and book your trip already now for 2013!
